He began his career at the Chicago Tribune. ... At Huckle Media LLC of St. Peter, Minn. (St. Peter Herald, Minnesota River Valley Shopper, et al.), Steven Pope has been named chief operating officer; previously, he was president and publisher of Freedom's Gazette of Colorado Springs, Colo., a job he'd held since late 2008 and remains chairman of the board of Huckle Media. Earlier, Pope was general manager of Swift Communications' Colorado Mountain News Media in Gypsum, Colo., a job he held for about two years. Earlier still, Pope was publisher of Swift's Colorado paper, the Vail Daily, for five years. Pope began his career as a circulator at the Long Beach Press Telegram in 1979, later was circulation director at the Tucson Newspaper Agency, also did stints with the Houston Post and the Denver Post and further was corporate circulation director for MediaNews Group. He was also publisher of the Houston Press, Metro Times Inc. and vice president, general manager and publisher of the Observer and Eccentric in suburban Detroit from 1992-2000. Pope joined Huckle's board in 2008 and was elected chairman in 2010. ... All OK: At The Oklahoman of Oklahoma City, Christopher Reen has been named publisher and president of OPUBCO Communications Group, effective Sept. 1; previously, Reen was executive vice president of business development, a job he'd held since 2007, and president of the company's Wimgo.com, for a year. Earlier, he was the vice president of sales and marketing at the paper for three years. Reen started his career at the Buffalo News in 1987 as an intern, later moving on to full-time sales and management positions. From 1995-1998, Reen was retail ad manager at Florida's Daytona Beach News-Journal, from 1998-2000, he was classified director at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and for the next three years, he was vice president of advertising at Gannett's Rochester Democrat and Gazette in New York. Reen replaces David Thompson, who will retire; Thompson had been publisher since 2003 and president of OPUBCO since 2007. Thompson started his career at The Oklahoman in 1974 selling retail ads and moved to the Colorado Springs Sun as ad director when The Oklahoman bought the paper in 1977. After a decade in Colorado, Thompson returned to Oklahoma as ad director, where he stayed for 14 years. In 2001, Thompson moved to Knight Ridder's Charlotte Observer in South Carolina as vice president of advertising. ... At the Washington Times, Ed Kelley has been named editor; previously, he was editor of The Oklahoman, a job he'd held since 2003. Kelley started his journalism career while in high school, covering local sports for his hometown paper, the Perry Daily Journal, in Oklahoma. He joined The Oklahoman as a summer intern in 1974 and a year later became a full-time reporter. He later served as the paper's Washington, D.C. bureau chief, city editor, business editor, editorial page editor and managing editor. Replacing Kelley will be Kelly Dryer Fry; she remains vice president of news for OPUBCO, a job she's held since 2007. The third-generation Oklahoman newswoman -- her family owns the El Reno Tribune -- joined the paper in 1994 as features editor and in 1997 moved over to the digital side of the company; she was named general manager of NewsOK.com in 2001. ...
